The 1980 Gibson ES-347 in Black stands as a refined and forward-thinking entry in Gibson’s semi-hollow lineup—an instrument that blends classic ES lineage with upscale appointments and versatile electronics. Introduced in 1978, the ES-347 quickly became known as the “Les Paul Custom” of the ES family, thanks to its luxurious details, premium materials, and expanded tonal range.

Crafted from laminated maple/poplar/maple, the body offers the articulate midrange, resonant airiness, and focused punch that define Gibson’s semi-hollow guitars. The deep Black finish provides a bold, elegant backdrop for the multi-ply binding and gold hardware, giving the instrument a distinctly upscale aesthetic. The traditional 16" body width and slim 1 5/8" depth deliver familiar comfort while maintaining the lively acoustic response the ES series is celebrated for.

The 3-piece maple neck, paired with a bound ebony fingerboard and large block inlays, provides a smooth, fast feel with excellent note clarity. Low, vintage-style frets contribute to its quick, effortless playability, while the brass nut adds durability and a subtle brightness to the attack. The early-’80s profile offers a satisfying blend of sleekness and support, suitable for both rhythm work and expressive lead playing.

A pair of humbuckers—wired with a coil-tap mini-toggle on the upper bout—gives the ES-347 impressive sonic flexibility. Players can move seamlessly from rich, full-bodied humbucker warmth to tighter, more single-coil-like textures with a simple flick of the switch. This versatility, combined with the nuanced response of the semi-hollow construction, makes the ES-347 an exceptional tool for jazz, blues, rock, fusion, and beyond. The TP-6 fine-tuning tailpiece adds another layer of precision, reinforcing the guitar’s reputation as a performance-ready, professional-grade instrument.
